The Winthrop softball team will play at home this weekend as host of the Winthrop Early Bird Tournament. The Lady Eagles normally don’t play at home until mid-March opting instead to play tournaments in warmer climates. Budget cuts and cost-saving ideas have led this inaugural event to be held at Terry Field.

Winthrop is halfway through a stretch of four games in eight days. The Eagles needed huge defensive plays, big-time shots, a whole lot of guts and an overtime period to beat UNC Asheville on Tuesday night at Winthrop Coliseum.

The Winthrop defense rose up where the offense faltered to force overtime and earn the Eagles their eighth straight Big South Conference win, 68-65, against UNC Asheville in front of a raucous crowd at the Winthrop Coliseum on Tuesday night.
